Sir,

On consideration, and in furtherance of what I heard yesterday, the decided opinions of the Doctors in respect to my health and the expected consequences of a longer stay in the climate, I feel it my duty to inform your Excellency at once, that I deem it my bounden duty towards myself and relations to proceed to Europe at the commencement of the next year.

Since February 1845, I have not had leave of absence except for a couple of days at a time to go to Macao, which is less than I am sure...

His Excellency

Sir John Bowring, Kt., LL.D.,
